Offertory Hymn Tune

Since this week’s communio is a bit more difficult than is typical, there are a few tracks here which are separated out:

  1. Normal demo of the Communio

  2. a slowed down “repeat after me” style just like we did at rehearsal

  3. a separate quick demo of the first two verses

Avail yourselves accordingly. 😅

Fr. Weber 380 • Communion i • Lent I
James Richardson
Fr. Weber 380 • Communion i • REPEAT AFTER ME • Lent I
James Richardson
Fr. Weber 380 • Communion VERSE demo • Lent I
James Richardson

As an aside, I challenged myself with the task of making a vernacular adaptation of the original Gregorian Communio for Lent I. Here it is if you’re interested. We will sing it next year.

Ash Wednesday (2026)

Greetings all—

As a reminder, mass will be at 5:00pm. I know that this is an awkward time; just get there when you can, and we will do the best we can with whoever we have. I will be in the loft by 4:30pm to warmup with those who are able to come ahead of time.

  1. Entrance Antiphon: You are merciful to all, O Lord…
*NB: we will only chant the antiphon.

  2. [No Kyrie, because the Penitential act is omitted, since the distribution of ashes takes its place, and no Gloria, since it is omitted for all of Lent.]

  3. Psalm 51: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. (Video)

  4. Lenten Gospel Acclamation: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.

  5. Distribution of Ashes:
The Choir will go down for ashes immediately during the first two antiphons, cutting to the front of the line like during communion.

    1. Antiphon 1: Fr. Weber JJR

    2. Antiphon 2: Fr. Weber JJR

    3. Antiphon 3: Dele, Domine, Iniquitatem Meam – English transcription of the chant from the Graduale Simplex (see below). Men chant odd verses, women chant even verses.

  6. Offertory Hymn: O Lord, You Gaze with Mercy (PASSION CHORALE)

  7. Ordinary (a.k.a. “Mass Parts”): Missa Simplex (Mass XVIII)

  8. Communion Antiphon: He who ponders the law of the Lord…
*NB: the antiphon is in the worship aid for all to sing.

  9. Communion “Hymn”: Parce Domine (harmonized chant with cantored verses)

  10. Recessional Hymn: Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days (ST. FLAVIAN)

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time (A • 2026)

Greetings All—
I’m sorry that I couldn’t get our ordo out in time for normal choir rehearsal time. I had some significant computer troubles today. Nevertheless, here it is, and better late than never!

This week will be a fun week of good “warhorse” hymns. Two melodies will either be new or less familiar, and I will be sure to point those out below. (But they are Oooooh so lovely! — we only have two more weeks to sneak in some fun ones before Lent starts!)

  1. Entrance Hymn: Entrance Antiphon Trope to the tune ITALIAN HYMN (a.k.a. “Come Thou, Almighty King”)

  2. Entrance Antiphon: (See below)

  3. Psalm: 112, The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.   (Video; mp3 below)

  4. Gospel Acclamation: Festal Alleluia (II) (Playlist)

  5. Offertory Antiphon: “Keep my footsteps firmly in Your paths…” (see below)

  6. Offertory Hymn: O Breath of Life come Sweeping Through Us to the tune ST. CLEMENT (a.k.a. The Day Thou, Gavèst Lord, is Ended)

  7. Communion Antiphon: Fr. Weber #1059 (see below)
*NB: we will sing from printed handouts which feature rhythmic modifications from the original to help it flow better. V3 Men, V4 Women

  8. Choral Anthem: Cantate Domino by Pitoni (Link to CMAA practice tracks)

  9. Communion Hymn: Praise My Soul the King of Heaven to the tune LAUDA ANIMA

  10. Recessional Hymn: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling to the tune BLÆNWERN.

Psalm & Alleluia:

Offertory Hymn (NEW!)

The first video is it’s original context, although we are singing an alternate text:

And here is an organ-only version which might be a little easier to learn from:

Our text:

Communion Antiphon:

Fr. Weber 1059 • Communion i • 5th in OT
RECOMMENDED Interpretation (non-official rhythm)

NB: the rhythms displayed in this image have been slightly altered from their original form to suit a more pleasing interpretation.

Communion Motet:

I’m going to reproduce the CMAA practice tracks for Cantate Domino by Pitoni here. The source documents are all found here.

Cantate Domino SOPRANO
Pitoni / CMAA
Cantate Domino ALTO
Pitoni / CMAA
Cantate Domino TENOR
Pitoni / CMAA
Cantate Domino BASS

Below is a nice rendition, although we will sing it through twice.

Recessional Hymn: (NEW!…ish)

(We’ve done this before, but it’s been a minute.)

Lenten Lookahead:

Sweelinck Miserere (quick organ demo)

The Lotti Miserere track (above) is organ-only, but there are time stamps to hear your part at a louder volume. I intend to make a proper PT of this, time permitting.
